Legalization

What is legalization?

Legalization is the most time consuming method of authentication and is listed as the minimum requirement to clear customs in certain countries around the world. It is the method by which certain documents are authenticated by an Embassy or Consulate in the U.S. for the country in which the document is destined. A number of countries, primarily in the Middle East, still require this kind of legalization.

The document may first need to be notarized and authenticated by the Department of State before it can be processed for legalization. After a stamp is applied by the State Dept, the document must be forwarded to the respective Embassy or Consulate of the relevant country in the U.S. For certain Arab countries, the document may also require additional certification by the National U.S. Arab Chamber of Commerce prior to Embassy legalization. Legalization can be a lengthy process, very specific to the particular country, and must be strictly complied with, or the documents can be rejected by the local authorities.
